Assistantships and Scholarships

Both new and continuing students are eligible for assistantships. Applicants should indicate on their Personal Information Sheet for History Applicants whether or not they wish to be considered for an assistantship.

Graduate assistantships provide a stipend of approximately $5,500 per academic year, plus tuition and the non-resident fee. (Students may still be responsible for some small university fees.) Graduate assistants must be enrolled full-time (9 credit hours) and may not hold other full-time employment. Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis with primary consideration being academic achievement.

Graduate assistants are required to work up to twenty hours a week. Work assignments usually entail assisting faculty members in research projects or working as a teaching assistant. The latter may include grading exams in lower-level undergraduate courses, preparing teaching materials, leading weekly undergraduate discussion sections, and delivering occasional lectures. From time to time, students may also be required to perform some light clerical duties as well.

Graduate Scholarships

Tuition scholarships from the 91Ö±²¥ Graduate School are available on a competitive basis and are generally open only to incoming students. These scholarships only cover tuition, and are not accompanied by a stipend or a work assignment. To be eligible, students must enroll full time (9 credit hours). Students who have been accepted into the graduate program must be nominated by the Department of History in order to be considered for a graduate scholarship.
