Sigma Kappa Hosts Ultraviolet Volleyball at 91直播
"We've never done this before鈥攊t's a new event," said chapter president Tara Pence. "Anybody can come play and it helps raise money for Alzheimer's Research."
Sigma Kappa sorority has several ongoing missions in philanthropy: to raise funds to support research on Alzheimer's Disease; to support Inherit the Earth, a national go-green campaign and to help raise money for the Maine Sea Coast Mission. The Sigma Kappa sorority was founded at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, and the UNO chapter helps to support an island off the coast of Maine by sending gift cards and other means of financial support, Pence said.
Violet is an official color of the sorority so the women decided on purple power in planning Tuesday's event, which took place at the Human Performance Center, a building with volleyball courts on campus affectionately known by Privateers as "The Chamber of Horrors." The New Orleans Privateers Volleyball team started its season there last month.
On Tuesday, 15 teams of six to eight people apiece registered for $5 and $8 apiece to participate in Sigma Kappa's Ultraviolet Volleyball tournament, which raised more than $600 for the Alzheimer's Association.
The event was part of the Privateer Plunge, six weeks of welcome programming designed to introduce new students to all things UNO. A number of freshmen came to the event, both to watch and to play, Pence said.
A number of fraternities and sororities also created teams. All who played were vying the tournament's engraved trophy, which was won by the Theta Xi chapter at 91直播.
