Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority Thinks Pink at 91直播
The 91直播 chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority raises awareness for breast cancer this week with events encouraging the UNO community to "Think Pink."
"It's an annual thing. We've brought in some new events to change things up," said Jessica L. Willis, philanthropy chair of Zeta Tau Alpha.
Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant cancer cells form in the tissues of the breast, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. With early detection, the survival rate is 98 percent.
Zeta Tau Alpha wants to create awareness about the disease and prevention and to help raise money for breast cancer research.
The week began with an effort that called on students to "Paint the Campus Pink." Sorority sisters, fellow Greeks and other students placed pink ribbons on trees in the quad and wrote messages in pink chalk on the sidewalks around campus.
On Tuesday, the sorority hosted a yogurt-eating contest at 6 p.m. in the amphitheater. As their friends and families consumed, Zeta Tau Alpha sorority collected the pink tops from yogurt containers to send to their sorority's national chapter. Every pink top collected from around the country will bring five cents to breast cancer education and research.
Tuesday's events also included promotional efforts for breast cancer awareness. Sorority sisters teamed up with the University Health Center to host a blood drive in the University Center and host tables with educational material regarding breast cancer. Among the materials handed out were plastic hang-cards to hang in the shower. The cards instruct women on how to perform self-examination on their breasts.
On Wednesday, the fun continued with a laser tag fundraiser open to all students and the UNO community. The event takes place from 4 to 9 p.m. at Laser Tag of Metairie, 8855 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie 70003.
Tonight, Zeta Tau Alpha hosts "Family Feud Night." Teams of five may play for $20 per team.
On Friday, the sorority hosts a pink party to celebrate the week's success and breast cancer survivors. The fun includes a dance competition and "Stars Out," where male volunteers place stars on their puffed-out chests and admirers place financial contributions in jars. The event, which promises free food, is open to the UNO community.
On Saturday, Zeta Tau Alpha sisters will work in the "Survivors Tent" at the annual 5K Race for the Cure, handing out pink ribbons at the New Orleans Saints game at the Louisiana Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Sunday.
