If you want to learn the basics of one of the most popular programming languages used by such companies as Google, YouTube, Netflix, IBM, and Dropbox, the 91ֱ is offering an accelerated, two-day coding course in December.
The Fundamentals of Python course, offered by Professional and Continuing Education (PaCE), is fast and comprehensive. After just two class days, students will have a foundational understanding of how to code in Python, which is also one of the most versatile and widely used programming languages, said Tina Chang, associate vice president for Professional and Continuing Education.
Chang said the popularity of Python is enticing a growing number of people who don’t consider themselves “techies” to pursue opportunities to learn the coding language.
“Additionally, with the growing number of technology companies in greater New Orleans, it is foreseeable that digital literacy will become increasingly important in Louisiana,” she said. “Consequently, UNO Professional and Continuing Education will be offering more workshops, courses, and certificates to help increase digital literacy as well as meet the existing interest in the community.”
The course instructor, Michael Flot, is a “seasoned expert” who is able to use Python in a myriad of professional realms, such as cybersecurity and bioinformatics, Chang said.
“If you're a working professional with limited time, learning from someone else's mistakes is invaluable,” Chang said. “Learning a new programming language can be an intimidating process; however, having this instructor guidance and camaraderie of learning with others makes it less so.”
The course will cover all the basic programming concepts within the Python language in just two class days. Students will learn:
• Setup environment
• Installing Python
• Installing anaconda packages and other necessary configurations
• Variables
• If else statements/Booleans
• File input output
• Functions
• Lists
• For loops
• While loops
• Classes and objects
“The workshop will benefit those who want to begin their journey with Python,” Chang said. “Ideally, students will also leave the workshop with a desire to pursue additional Python coursework, which will over time, give them the knowledge and skills to delve into hot fields like machine learning, data analysis and visualization.”
The course will be held Dec. 17 and 18th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The registration fee is $295. Follow this link to
