Continuing a decades-long commitment to the 91ֱ, the New Orleans Geological Society (NOGS) has donated $15,000 to the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences to help advance the department’s goals. The NOGS annually provides thousands of dollars to the department for student scholarships for juniors, seniors and graduate students.
“This latest donation by NOGS will help enhance department and student understanding of the regional geology and environmental concerns,” said Mark Kulp, associate professor and chair of earth and environmental sciences.
The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences offers baccalaureate degrees in geosciences and environmental and coastal science, a master’s degree in earth and environmental sciences, and a Ph.D. in engineering and applied science. It also hosts several laboratories engaged in cutting-edge research in coastal and riverine sediment transport, stratigraphy, coastal restoration, coastal geomorphology, aquatic ecology and vertebrate paleontology.
The New Orleans Geological Society was organized in 1941 as a nonprofit organization for the purpose of facilitating the development of the profession and science of geology, with specific emphasis to exploration and production of petroleum and natural gas. Since Hurricane Katrina, the society’s objectives expanded to include the dissemination of the geological facts of flood control, engineering and environmental geoscience, and the maintenance of a high standard of professional conduct of its members.
