UTHealth Health Science Center in Houston, Texas

Our MicroSURP Program has 8 positions available for undergraduate students to conduct summer research in the Texas Medical Center with participating faculty. Each student will be given their own project and will work at the bench alongside graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, staff, and faculty. This 10-week program (May 19 thru July 25) includes a $6000 stipend and convenient housing for participating students is available.
Michigan State University

Michigan State University (MSU) hosts the BRUSH Summer Research Program for undergraduates pursuing biomedical and research-related careers. The goal of the BRUSH Program is to provide hands-on research exposure and graduate or professional school preparation opportunities for students from populations underrepresented in biomedical research. Program dates are May 19 to August 1, 2025. Undergraduate students earn a stipend of $5,700 and are provided room and board on campus, for a total package valued at $9,600.
Michigan State University

The Plant Genomics @ MSU REU Program provides high quality research and training experiences for undergraduates interested in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, chemistry, bioinformatics, and computational sciences. During the 10-week program, participants are embedded within a research group at Michigan State University and undertake a mentored research project with the overall aim of providing an insight into life as a scientific researcher. In addition to a 10-week research project, students participate in professional development activities including, training in computational biology, as well as workshops and seminars designed to enhance their scientific and professional skills and provide information on graduate school and diverse STEM careers.
A $6,500 stipend, on campus housing, meals, and travel support are provided.

Mississippi State University

Students selected to participate in the Environmental Focus in Food, Energy, and Water Security REU program at Mississippi State University will join the labs of faculty who are actively engaged in and publish in related research areas, including: (1) the conversion of biomass and energy crops into biofuels, (2) the utilization of biochar (a biofuel production byproduct) for water purification, and (3) the enhancement of food security through biochar soil amendment. Project components include growing biomass, converting it into biofuels, and using the byproducts to clean water and improve soil quality. This undergraduate training program will benefit from the rich tradition of collaborative and environmentally focused education and research at Mississippi State University. Students will present a research poster at the Undergraduate Research Symposium at the end of the summer. This REU program is 10 weeks long starting on May 27, 2025, and ending on August 1, 2025. Students will be provided housing, food stipends, and monetary stipends.

Paso del Norte borderlands of Las Cruces, El Paso, and Ciudad Ju谩rez
New Mexico State University

This program is designed to provide students with background research and methodological training on immigration and border policies, with a particular focus on asylum and the impacts of changes in US policy. Students will partner with community organizations and shelters for migrants in Las Cruces, El Paso, and Ciudad Ju谩rez, where they will conduct interviews and survey migrants and their families from several countries, including Venezuela, Haiti, Mexico, Ecuador, and Guatemala.
Applicants must still be undergraduates when participating in the program.

University of Nebraska - Lincoln

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln鈥檚 Minority Health Disparities Initiative (MHDI) administers the Health Equity REU, which is an interdisciplinary program aimed at conducting research into understanding and reducing health disparities and in increasing and diversifying health researchers from minoritized and underserved populations.

Sigma Xi: The Scientific Research Honor Society

The Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research (GIAR) program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from most areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision related research. Students use the funding to pay for travel expenses to and from a research site, or for purchase of non-standard laboratory equipment necessary to complete a specific research project.
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Science, Technology and Policy Program is designed to provide opportunities to participate in programs, projects, and activities at the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM). The STP Program provides an opportunity for highly talented scientists and engineers to participate in technical and policy-related FECM projects. FECM will provide a supplemental stipend to offset the costs of health insurance. Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance plans offered through ORISE. Participants may receive an allowance for education and/or scientific activities as approved by FECM. The initial appointment can be for one year or less, but may be renewed upon recommendation of FECM contingent on the availability of funds up to 4 additional years. The appointment can be made on a full-time or part-time basis.
National Science Foundation

Every year, approximately 200,000 men and women leave U.S. military service and return to civilian life. NSF is committed to making sure that our nation鈥檚 veterans have pathways into STEM education and careers. The Supporting Veterans in STEM Careers Act, signed into law in 2020, directs NSF to "encourage veterans to study and pursue careers in STEM and computer science". As such, NSF offers several programs and initiatives to help veterans transition into a science and engineering career. As of a review in June 2020, there were 275 NSF-funded projects, in more than 100 programs across all directorates, that feature veterans. The Center offers a wide range of part-time internship opportunities to current, recent, or returning college students. Wilson Center interns have the opportunity to develop both research and professional skills, and to participate in the numerous activities and events held at the Center. There are at least 80-90 interns at the Center at any given time. Availability of positions generally corresponds to the beginning of the fall, spring, and summer terms. Most internships are unpaid. The Wilson Center has two different internship programs (Research Assistant internships and Staff Assistant internships) with separate applications and deadlines.

The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students and recent graduates to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 17 participating DOE laboratories/facilities. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission. Applications for the SULI program are solicited annually for three separate internship terms. Internship appointments are 10 weeks in duration for the Summer Term (May through August) or 16 weeks in duration for the Fall (August through December) and Spring (January through May) Terms. Each DOE laboratory/facility offers different research opportunities; not all DOE laboratories/facilities offer internships during the Fall and Spring Terms.

Based in downtown Washington, D.C., the Foundation for Defense of Democracies has a number of internship opportunities available during the spring, fall and summer semesters. All FDD interns will have the opportunity to participate in a twice-monthly speaker series, which brings high-level DC officials and senior staff members to engage with interns in an intimate setting. FDD interns will be encouraged to build on their academic skills by working closely with senior staff. FDD is also happy to assist students who wish to earn academic credit for this internship. Can you write a story in just 50 words? We鈥檒l provide a prompt to get you started, but where the story goes from there is entirely up to you. Entrants must write a piece of short fiction based on the prompt provided. Entrants may submit only one entry. Entries should be close to but no more than 50 words. The prize consists of one mug from The Literary Gift Company for the all-age category, a notebook for teen winners, a selection of books for the young writers category and books for the Gaelic category.
